Before 2021, an appellation « Made in Normandy » existed, offering criteria less restrictive than the PDO. Although this designation ensured a certain quality and a Norman origin, it did not impose the same requirements as the PDO, which could lead to confusion.
Broader origin : Could be produced in the entire Normandy region.
No restriction on breed : Milk could come from cows of any breed.
Milk types : Allowed raw milk, pasteurized or thermized.
Varied packaging : Could be sold in wooden or cardboard boxes.
