Bordeaux Chateau Chasse Spleen Cru Bourgeois
Located in the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation, just west of Margaux, Château Chasse-Spleen has long been regarded as the leading estate of the appellation. Though not officially classified in 1855, the château was named one of the six Crus Exceptionnels in the Cru Bourgeois classification of 1932, and is widely considered to produce wines at near cru classé quality.
Founded in 1820 after the division of the Grand Poujeaux estate, Chasse-Spleen owes its name to a phrase attributed to Lord Byron, praising the wine’s power to “chasser le spleen” (dispel melancholy). Over time, it has also been romantically linked to the poetry of Baudelaire, adding to its mystique.
Today, the estate spans 80 hectares, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Merlot (25%), and Petit Verdot (5%). Dense plantings and diverse soils of gravel, clay, and limestone produce wines known for their balance, structure, and vibrant fruit, capable of both youthful charm and graceful ageing. The château also produces a second wine, L’Héritage de Chasse-Spleen, a third wine, L’Oratoire de Chasse-Spleen, and even a distinctive white wine made from Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc.
Since 1976, Chasse-Spleen has been part of the Merlaut family, with Céline Villars at the helm since 2000, ensuring both tradition and innovation carry the estate
